In this type of compressor, gears mounted at the ends of the rotor shafts rotate in synchronization, enabling the two rotors to mesh with each other. The recessed surface sections of the rotors, together with the inner wall of the cylinder, form the working volume. As the rotors rotate, they draw gas from the inlet port and move it toward the outlet port. At the moment when the working volume connects to the outlet port, the high-pressure gas flows back into the volume, causing an abrupt increase in pressure within the effective working volume and thus pushing the gas into the exhaust passage. The two rotors do not come into contact with each other; instead, they are sealed by precisely controlled gaps between them. Consequently, the discharged gas remains free from lubricant contamination.
